The Motor Boys Clarence Young 9781484948019 Books Reviews
First of 22 adventures of Bob, Jerry and Ned on the road, on water, and in the air, with a break to fight in World War I, 1906-1924.
Their girlfriends Mollie, Alice, and Helen, so-EVER pretty in their white dresses, would briefly socialize with them in their hometown of Cresville, Massachusetts, before the Boys departed on their latest adventure unless, usually, were already on their way or had arrived. Their only end-of-story reappearances were here, cheering Bob winning the cycling race and #9 Motor Boys in the Clouds, 1910, greeting Boys on their return ("Oh, weren't you dreadfully frightened?" Mollie).Their final appearance was #20 Ned, Bob and Jerry on the Firing Line, 1918, visiting the Boys in their Army camp; in prior Ned, Bob and Jerry in the Army, 1917, Helen, from pro-German family, had tried to persuade
Bob not to enlist but, fortunately, in the end he says, "Her father had changed his views [possibly from the anti-German hysteria, vigilantism, of the time?] and they're real [scared?] Americans now."
But, unfortunately and unhappily, they and the other equally pretty young girls of the series WERE A JINX; whenever Mollie, Alice, and
Helen, had bigger--for them--parts, or another girl appeared either the Boys or a male character GOT TIED UP
#3 Motor Boys in Mexico, 1907, peasant Esmeralda, MOST HEROIC GIRL OF SERIES.
Bob is kidnapped, tied up, locked up by bandits for ransom, she helps him escape, when he recaptured, tied up, again, locked up, she finds
Jerry and Ned, leads them back to rescue him.
(SHOULD been Esmeralda, as hacienda owner's daughter, one kidnapped, rescued by Boys, MORE heroic.)
#5 Motor Boys Afloat, 1908, ONLY "DANGER" FOR GIRLFRIENDS.
Boys take Mollie and Alice (apparently no room for Helen) on ride on their new motor boat, it hits, runs aground, on sandbar.
"Oh, this is terrible, I'm going to jump out!" Alice, panicked
"We'll sink," fears Mollie.
Stranded for hours, night coming, Alice, "Something bit me on the foot, I believe it's a rat, save me!" Turns out to be broken wire disabling
boat; repaired, sail back, girls deposited on dock, and out of plot.
REAL DANGER Criminals steal boat for getaway, Ned and Bob hostages, "Their jaws ached from the strain of the gags. Their hands
were numb from lack of circulation caused by the tight ropes." Jerry leads rescue, unties Boys
(SHOULD been real danger for Mollie and Alice [and Helen, poor girl shouldn't feel left out] they the ones taken as hostages on crooks' own motor boat, for ransom also, bound and gagged below, tearfully fearful , Boys pursue in their boating beauty, board, overpower gang in fist-swinging melee, save girls, hailed as THE CHAMPIONS OF CRESVILLE!)
#6 Motor Boys on the Atlantic, 1908, Jessica Hardack, niece of lighthouse keeper, ONLY CHANCE FOR GIRL TO GET TIED UP
THROWN AWAY.
Gang wanting to wreck, loot ship, have Boys' perennial Nemesis Noddy Nixon lure Jessica away on boat ride, "conveniently" runs out of gas,
while take over lighthouse, put Boys bound hand and foot in storeroom "The rope was firmly tied. Strain as they did they could not loosen the
fastening and at long last they had to stop as the cords cut into their flesh." They had finally untied themselves by the time Jessica returned,
let them out of storeroom.
(SHOULD had Jessica tied up with them, cut all that frustrating folderol with Noddy, boys pry bolts off door's hinges to escape, saving Jessica too, just themselves mere self-preservation.)
#10 Motor Boys Over the Rockies, 1910, ONLY ADVENTURE FOR GIRLFRIENDS.
Boys take girls on airship ride over Cresville, they Initially scared, "It safer than managing an automobile," realizes Helen.
Thieves stealing airship overpower night watchman Old Sud Snuffles, "tied with numerous ropes...he was gagged."
(SHOULD forget Old Sud, -1,000 on the saving scale, thieves steal airship in daylight, tie, gag, Boys, girls, Boys free themselves, overpower gang, saving girls 1,000,000 on the scale.)
#15 Motor Boys Under the Sea, 1914, Bob's cousin Grace Sheldon, ONLY GIRL IN DANGER.
She, Father, missing at sea, Boys search, find them captives on Nautilus-type undersea craft of Nemo-like madman Dr. Klause, become prisoners with them. But KLAUSE to be the one who "struggled with all his might to break his bonds" after the Boys took over the craft.
Excellant product.
